It has been over two years since returning to this old Blog site and although we are keeping everyone updated on our newer Blog site at www.photobysuebird.com/blog, I did not want to end this great little blog that hosts so many of my original happenings in my Photography business.

NEW Studio sessions available soon!
Done! It took a while, but we are almost Done! The new home studio/gallery space creates a whole new feeling for us. I have been inspired by so many great magazines of artistic spaces and as well by fellow photographers and colleagues' spaces! So before the grand unveiling I need to plaster the walls with photos, so no sneak peak photos of the space yet.....(Sorry Jamie, I promise soon) HA!

UPCOMING ~ Limited edition sessions
So lots going on and coming up and I would need a full page to update you. But I'll keep it quick for you, Throughout the year I will be holding Limited Edition sessions around the city, including two of my favorite boutiques in town.

Be sure to wander in soon to WAG Doggin It Cafe on Bank Street and sign up your mom for a very special soulful session with her "fur-mate". What a wonderful Mother's day present, celebrating the family bond. Sessions will take place on April 25th, the sitting fee is $100 with a 20 minute urban session, the results are going to be stunning! Be sure to sign up soon there are only 11 spaces available, these sessions are going to be very intimiate and soulful, creating a piece of art for that special mom.

Coming in MAY is "Fur in the Family" was this your last official family photo? I am shaking it up a bit and going a little Urban with this one. A huge thank-you to friend and great photographer Deb Dekoke who loaned me this great vintage image of her family growing up on the Dekoke Berry Farm in kanata!

This two day event is a fundraiser for Ottawa Therapy Dogs being held at both Bark and Fitz Locations in Westboro and Kanata. Details for signing up are available at each Bark and Fitz location. Be sure to book your space soon. As soon as you are pre-booked and have paid your deposit with the Bark and Fitz location, I will be calling you to have a pre-session consultation so that we can go over some of the ideas and concepts behind your session time.

Just a quick note: It has been a great pleasure working with one of Canada's top Dog magazines Dogs in Canada over the past three years, and recently it was an honor to receive a letter from Dogs in Canada Editor Kelly Caldwell announcing that a photo of mine had been nominated for a Dog Writer's Association Award. Back in February Ms. Caldwell confirmed that the photo won top prize! This is a great honor to be recognized along side of some of the top photographers and magazines. Cheers to Dogs in Canada!

To the newest Ottawa Couple!

Last but not least ~ A huge applause for the lovely marriage of a great friend of mine. Dr. Mark de Gruchy to his lovely bride Karen. I had the grand pleasure of photographing their day last weekend and it was one of the most incredible days. I can only show you what they have seen or I am sure Mark would hunt me down! HA! Love you guys! Thanks for letting me be a part of your wedding.

HELLOOOOO!

yikes, been a couple of weeks. I think I went back into the hole with Willy Wiarton the groundhog when he saw 6 more weeks of winter! HA!

I have a great excuse, one that has kept me very busy and like a little kid opening a present on Christmas morning! My new space! Wahoo, we are on the final couple of days of renovation before I can start to retro-fit my new ikea furniture into my new studio/office/client viewing/kid zone/husband office/cool basement/........basically let's say "multifunctional" space. I'll post some shots of the new space, but hopefully I can have you come over for a little open house down the road. See the space for your own eyes.

But as I had hoped to do a Year in review when we were actually celebrating 2009......I got delayed so to start off this idea, here is a a great photo taken by Artists Kellie Oliphant Burns.
This was posted on her blog a while back, but I wanted to show off this cute little guy...this is Leeroy and he is an IGGY. He was the perfect model for my shoot for an article in Dogs in Canada magazine about renting out dogs. I know crazy! People actually rent out dogs now.

Recenty, I was invited to speak at a local Ottawa Kennel Club meeting and I want to thank everyone for a great night. I had a great time meeting all of you and look forward to coming back in the future. I hope you all are enjoying the perPETual calendars!

And A Huge Congrats out to one of my clients, local Ottawa PUG Breeder Lorna Sale! She recently attended Westminster with one of her Canadian champion pugs Nessa and received the first honorable mention! What a fantastic accomplishment! Her pugs are truly beautiful! Check these guys out in "the" chair!

Chilly Dogs New Space!

If you have not discovered the best coats on the market.....visit Chilly Dogs to get a glance at their colors and sizes. Located in Ottawa Canada, these coats are designed by Chilly Dogs owner Julie Kelly who knows a lot about cold weather!

Julie is a great friend and colleague and over the years I have had the pleasure of photographing her coats and dogs. It was on the trip down to Dewey Beach in 2007, that the dream for this room was put into action. The ten hour drive was all chit chat about the space and what it would look like! SO I was really excited to watch this room come together.

So Voila! The year has started off fresh and new for Chillydogs, moving into their new space that is bright and very funky! With a blend of furniture and storage solutions from IKEA, Julie has created an ultimate creative space for her company~ I am partial to the photography on the walls! HA ha! ( yes those are my shots of Julie's dogs Bizmark & Mari)

Oh ya! And those bags in the basket above are her Sock monkey bags! Great for the beach....no sand!

Maybe next time Victoria!

Well, after a small crisis with our little Chilly-dog, it has come to pass that the Victoria trip will be canceled at this time. Chilli has been on medication for a sist and now she needs it to have removed, so the air fare goes to chilli's butt surgery! The sist is just beside her tail.
She is doing well though and we are looking forward to her being healed following the surgery. I'll be anticipating some funny cone head shots following her surgery.

But hey....psst....we are heading to Newfoundland in March......

Lil' Flirt

Ahh, William William.....look at those eyes. This little guy brightened up my weekend. I started with Williams mom & dad over a year ago as we started to document William's journey here. And look at him now! 1 year old!

This is a great package I offer as well called 4 one year, Starting with a Maternity session, followed by a newborn, 6 months and 1 year session, we bring the photos together to create an incredible book on your babies first year of life! I think William has become quite savvy with the camera! Cannot wait to see the reaction of Williams mom and dad when I place the book in their hands!

It's best to book in at 7 months to begin this journey. Although much of my clientele knows about my dog photography, I was originally trained as a newspaper photographer, so I offer packages for portrait sessions with people as well.

Looking forward to starting some new baby sessions this year! 2009...crazy!

Happy New Year.....
Oh okay so it's really late! But hey I'll blame it on the freezing weather! I was frozen and couldn't move....oh ya and the dog ate my homework! HA!

So 2009! wOw and January is already half gone. crazy.

I am pretty excited about 2009, there are some great events happening! Starting in February, I'll be traveling to Victoria Island B.C. for some great weather & to meet some cool west coast dogs. Session spaces are available, so book soon or let your long distance friends know how to get in touch soon.

Spring will be action packed as usual with some great events supporting some awesome groups who work with incredible dogs. Keep posted for the details on how to reserve your session for a two day event of photography at your local Bark & Fitz, "Fur in the family". This will be your chance to get an Urban hip family portrait done of the whole furamily. Details to come to Bark & Fitz Westboro and Kanata soon.

Be sure to look for me at the Annual BARK walkathon in May. For those who support BARK and raise money, this is the day I salute you with a free portrait in the park! As well win a great photo package as one of the "top fundraisers" prizes. Each year I have donated the popular Dog Eared Book package which includes a 2 hour session at your home & local park. In the end you will receive a book that tells the story of the bond between you and your dog. This is a prize valued over $800. BARK was Established in September 2001,The Bytown Association for Rescued Kanines (B.A.R.K.) is an all breed "no kill" rescue organization.They are a registered charity comprised solely of dedicated and experienced volunteers who go to the ends of the earth to help dogs who are found in horrific conditions.

Be sure to keep your eyes posted for the Annual Look A Like contest photo sessions at WAG A huge fundraiser success last year raising over $1000 for the Ottawa Humane Society! Keep posted to their web site and hear for more info on how to sign up. Take a peak at some of the winners from last year.

And this is just the first part of the year! But to start off your year right, you need to head over to the new Bark & Fitz store located in the Kanata Centrum. The new beautiful space is huge and offers great products, fantastic nutritious food for your pet, a grooming salon or should I say S-PAW. It was great to see some of my new work up on the walls including the new Loyal Noble True panel.

Also on display is the metallic print of a greyhound framed in beautiful barn board. Be sure to take a spin out their way, tell them I sent you!

wow.....
here and gone, hard to believe that x-mas has already passed. Crazy how fast this year flew by. This leads me to say thank -you to all the wonderful dogs & their people who invited me inn to capture their spirits.

I am creating a little year in review for the blog & updating some galleries on my web site.

AND...very excited to let you know that I will be a little Jet PAWed (jet lagged i know corny) at the end of January. I am flying into Victoria B.C. January 31st for a week, I look forward to meeting some great western dawgs! There is still room for sessions through out the week.

Walking Alone....

I find myself photographing some wonderful old souls over these last few weeks leading up to Christmas. It is with sadness that these last minute sessions come to me, for the the Very same reasons that I decided to turn my camera towards capturing these wide eyed furry friends that grace our daily lives for such short times.

I, like many of my clients, define my life in dog years....each memory I have growing up is attached to a dog. For me there are the "Dillon" years, growing up as a little girl in the west end of Montreal with my very own personal horse, a beautiful fawn "Great Dane". He taught me how to follow the sun spots around the house for that extra warm nap in the afternoons. He also taught me to double bag! HA!

I have the "Lucky" years, which bring back vivid memories of high school, college and my first newspaper job at the Dorchester Signpost in Southern Ontario, where this wonderful collie cross girl shared my trips back home along the 401 in my white Mazda 323. Lucky came to work with me and sat under my desk, she kept me company while my family lived straight across the opposite side of the province. She was a constant while my photography career was just beginning and moving me all over the province every year or so.

She was 14 when we lost her to brain cancer. I had just started my family, my youngest daughter was only a couple of years old and funny enough she remembers Lucky and talks of her. Commenting on how much she misses her.

In salute of those of us who get it, those who know about the loss, I leave you with this excerpt from one of my favorite books, by Ottawa writer Roy MacGregor "The Dog and I ". If you don't have this book, you have to get it, but I do not suggest reading it in public....

Walking Alone Page 157

"I am having to learn to walk all over again. Don't misunderstand. I did not break a leg. There is no apparent brain malfunction, despite all those years of covering hockey. I am learning to walk alone, and is not an easy thing to do. There is no longer a dog around here to walk me
( yes, it was finally "time"; enough said, please), and yet I remain one of those people who must, absolutely must, get out each day and work off excess energy.

For nearly 16 years Bandit walked me. And for 16 years before Bandit came along, Bump walked me. Dogs, in fact have been walking me since I was eleven years old and a family down the river was handing out mutts that were still hanging off their one mother but looked as though they had several different fathers. So it is only in these past few weeks that I have realized that I cannot walk alone.

When I head down the street and over the crosswalk toward the park we always walked in. I now think every driver passing by figures I have a heart condition. I am out here, walking under doctor's orders. Or prehaps I am something never seen before in this suburban neighbourhood - a middle aged man without a car and am therefore immediately under suspicion.

It has all brought home the fact that we are defined by the company we keep. There is not a man alive who has ever pushed a stroller and not noted how , miraculously, women coming in the other direction no longer avoid eye contact but simply smile widely at you. And there is not a dog walker born who has not benefited from the doubt that is erased in the minds of all he passes. If the dog is friendly- and all of ours have been tail wagging, crotch nuzzling, face licking basket cases- then the owner is automatically presumed friendly as well, and the strangers will nod and say hello and often stop to pat a head until they are so soaked in saliva they must head off in search of towels...........But at this time of year it is too cold for biking, too early for skiing, and too often too icy and slushy for running, so there is really nothing to do each day but head out in the dying light and walk. Alone. A suspicious character, up to no good, Someone who had better find another dog soon to walk him. "

Sneak peek from WAG

I am so excited by the shots today that I had to load up a thank you to all the great dogs that came by WAG for their X-mas photos. As well hats off to their "persons" who let me create some x-mas shots that were a little different than your usual festive furry fotos!

Here is Gaston (said with a very french accent, at least in my head, HA!) a beautiful Brussel Griffen and my main dude Bizmark! He is the talented dog of his person......Julie Kelly of Chillydogs.

So what's with the "person" thing you say.....go see the movie BOLT. Loved it! Kids loved it! Everything about the movie, is what I see in camera everyday, in all of your dogs eyes.

It was great to see the Greyhounds out for the special day as well! Thanks to Laura Simmerman for staying the day to help educate and inform about the plight of the greyhounds & the local fundraising movement, saving greyhound's lives, giving them forever homes!

Christmas Card Photo sessions 2008

Christmas.........right around the corner! CRAZY, where does the time fly....I am not sure. Just to make sure everyone is on their toes, I am booking Christmas card sessions so you can send out some FUR-tastic cards.

Each session includes a one hour on location photo session, 48 5x7 folding Christmas cards with the envelopes & 2 8x10 prints. If you happen to be a former client and have some great shots already, we can use those shots and order the cards on their own! You have to call soon to book, spaces are very limited and time is a runnin' out.

This card above was created from last years x-mas photo session at Wag Doggin it cafe on Bank Street. Which happens to be planned for this year again and is just around the corner Saturday November 29th. Bookings for this day are being taken at the store and fill up very quickly, this year's theme is S(ight h)ounds of Christmas. Of course anyone is welcome to come in for a quick photo, but this year I am paying respect to all the sight hounds & the plight of the Greyhound.

mr roast beef

This was so cute that I had to post this, I recently had a client email me to frame a photo of their beloved boston terrier named Charlie for his vet. It seems to be that Charlie has a thing for roast beef, so the story goes.

Shopping for Thanksgiving, weekend Charlie's owner purchased a beautiful roast and proceeded to shop in the next store before returning to the car.

Upon arriving back at the car, it became quickly apparent that Charlie Aka " mr roast beef" had proceeded to remove the wrapping from the roast beef and help her trim the fat off the roast! This is after he got into trunk area and brought the roast into the car! So after a weekend at the vet clinic, "mr roast beef" is doing just fine! HA!!! Love it!

Greyhounds Reach the Beach 2008

Looking forward to a great car ride with owner and creator of Chillydog coats Julie Kelly! The ten hour drive to Rehoboth turns into a fantastic jam session of marketing, design and business ideas!

Over the summer, I was accepted to partner with a great Hollywood designer Gina Alexander who makes incredible hand bags featuring images from one of my photo sessions. Greyhounds Reach the Beach
Rehoboth Deleware Oct 9-13th

The dog days of summer are over and I am already getting ready for GRTB, the ultimate gathering of greyhounds on the east coast! Greyhounds and their owners from all over North America gather in the lovely coastal towns of Rehoboth and Dewey Beach Deleware. No matter what the weather turns out to be, images from this event are among some of my all time favorites!

WEIM-WONDERFUL!
What goes round and round and round, other than a dog chasing it's tail! my new biz card

All these crazy thunder storms we are having are keeping me in and in front of the computer screen....and it's a good thing, here is a sneak peek of my new biz card coming soon. And althought this template shows it as a square, I assure you it will be round! ALways wanted a round business card! Had a great time designing this one, LOVED photographing this puppy. Keep an eye out for it at local vet clinics and your favorite dog stores.

Arthur + Sara

There is something very majestic about a barn, the textures, the mood and the light. There something even more captivating for me.....the bond that exists between a horse and it's owner. The smells of a barn and the images are running through my veins. I grew up around a barn and riding a little when I was a kid. So this is only a natural progression for me and my photography. So a long over due introduction, the beginning of the Urban horse photog!

WEST fest 2008!

A great day at west fest 2008 in Westboro yesterday. It was supposed to rain but it remained sunny and we managed to raise some great money for BARK. Come by the Bark and Fitz booth to check out some great doggy ice cream cones, poochie sushi and grab a quick pic of you and your dog.

This year I chose to pay tribute to the classic photo booth shots that would get at your local mall (tacky ornage and blue backgrounds and all!).

Over $1000 raised for Ottawa Humane Society!

It was a wild and crazy day as 50 contestants battled it out to win the flat screen TV at WAG's first annual Look a Like Contest! Some contestants were so original that no one could compare and they had the camera to themselves! Like Macko shaking below, a gorgeous Komondor! This was my first encounter with this awesome breed! WOW! And below is Eszti, a breed named Puli, with owner Heather! Love the hair do's!

We had a great time and were able to raise over $1000 for the Ottawa Humane Society.Special Thanks go to Realtor Tracey Arnett Realty, for donating the flat screen TV that drove everyone out to the event!

And a huge thank you to Wag Store owners Joan and Lynne for inviting me to photograph this event and be a part of making a difference in an animal's life at the Humane Society.

A-Channel

It was an early morning at the house, making the trip into the local news station for a live hit with Kurt Studley of the A-Channel. All in the name of the Ottawa Humane society and the fundraiser event at WAG the doggin it cafe tomorrow from 10:30 to 4:30.

We are having a look alike contest and I will be on hand to take the photos of all the entries. We are accepting a donation for the Ottawa Humane Society. But if you donate $20 to the humane society then you will receive an 8x10 print of your photo, but if you donate $30 to the humane Society then I'll throw in one of my limited edition perPETual calendars as well!

This should be a ball of fun so I am looking forward to meeting everyone who can come out to participate!

Old Souls

Over the past month I have received three messages from clients that their beloved dogs had passed away. I think it is important to honor these old souls who help keep our lives balanced in so many ways. I thought it would be nice to honor, Zu Zu, Crom & B.J. with a favorite quote about the nature of these great friends.

March issue of Dogs in Canada

Available on the shelves today is the March issue of Dogs in Canada. Back in February, we braved some nasty weather for a photo session with Ottawa area Borzoi Breeder Rita Walker. "Southern Dawgs"

It has been a great trip to horse country in Virginia and we have done two fabulous dog sessions on some incredible estates. I have been very fortunate to experience two wonderful corgis named Flora & Ivy Geranium and an old soul named Arch. I would love to say that I have been romping around in sandles and shorts, but I think I brought the Canadian cold weather with me.

Best part of the trip has been staying with a great friend and visiting with Scarlette and Dash. The dynamic duo of the elegant greyhound and the southern belle black cocker spaniel.

I am looking forward to many future trips back to meet some more incredible southern dawgs.

On the Road!

A week today I'll be a little more South and hopefully enjoying some much needed spring weather! Along with this lovely trip to Virginia to see a great friend will be the privilege of photographing a Great Dane named Arch! I am very excited for this photo session and will update all of you from the warmer temperatures during the trip. Just to keep it real! HA!

Another day at WAG

Westfest revived!
Included on the walls of Bark and Fitz is this poster I designed that includes all the dogs I photographed for westfest in 2006, I was unable to make it to Westfest in 2007 and so it was a great surprise when owner of Bark and Fitz Ottawa Lynne Grandmaitre reminded me of this file from the 2006 archives. I love the personalities of each dog! I felt it had a touch of spring to it...... and we could use a little of that right now !

Many of my clients know that I support many organizations that work to better the treatment, the rescue and provide excellent care to animals. I have been very fortunate to have some incredible friends who have worked to make a difference in the lives of the Galgos, regularly donating medical supplies, coats and collars. After seeing some of the most horrific treatment on Galgos, I am drawn to this quote:

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which it treats it's animals". ~ Ghandi

It is always a shock when I see some of the images coming from Europe through some of my sources, concerning the mis-treatment of these animals. I urge you to open your eyes to some of these images and sign the petition and make a stand. If everyone thinks only "one" signature won't make a difference, then there won't be change.

Welcome 2008!

A very big thank you to all of the clients who made 2007 a fantastic year. It was great to meet so many incredible dogs an owners who's passion for the love of their companions inspires me to capture that special bond every time! I am very lucky to have created a special bond with each of you and I cherish the relationships that we have created despite the loss of our furry friends.

There was some great events including Lick for Life bringing awareness to Lifestream, A Kingston based animal blood bank organization in it's start-up phase. The girls of Paws for Charity were able to raise over $1500 for the Canadian Cancer Society and breast cancer research, a huge thank you to all of the clients who purchased copies of my new 2 year perPETual calendar, with a total of $144 dollars from the sales of the calendar from October to December! Dewey beach was a fantastic trip this year with beautiful weather and lots of waves to swim in! Did I mention that this trip is in October and yes we were swimming! BARK had some great events that we were a part of. This organization does wonderful work helping rescue dogs out of some of the most horrific situations. And they helped me find Chilly, my wacky little terrier.....or so we think is a terrier? This little ball of fire has added a huge element of laughter, love and loyalty that my two girls aged 2 and 5 have cherished. What a wonderful gift to teach children. Future rescue and animal activists for sure!

I really feel so lucky to have met and been a part of capturing memories for the souls who have followed their journey to Rainbow Bridge. Each one of these animals has touched my heart and I have been so privileged to have captured their spirits and keep the memories alive for their special owners.

A year in review is always a huge task and so I'll leave this post with a new start, late in the fall I had the opportunity to capture a new type of client! Harry the CAT! What a stunning little soul! Eyes that rip right through to your heart! Here is a sneak peak of some of the great images we captured of Harry.........

So yes, we are now accepting commissions for our furry feline friends as well!

So my new years resolution...........to blog more frequently. That's for you Aunt Sue! LOL!

A country "KISSmas" Pic!
What a great time Friday night at WAG. Thanks to all the staff that helped make this event go smoothly and for feeding me lemonaid!

Although not very many people wanted to be in the photos (oh well) we still had some great shots with some funky hats and scarfs! Here are a few of my favorites, but honestly they all tunred out great.

Just a quick note to everyone picking up the photos and greeting cards, I am hoping to have them all at WAG for pick up by Friday night. I'll keep you posted and give you a ring when they are at the store and ready.

BARK santa photos
President and founder of BARK Sharon McKeil, sent me the results of Saturday's pictures with SANTA! WOW a whopping $6000 was raised with $2000 alone being raised by the photos with Santa. Thank you to everyone who was a part of the festive gathering this past Saturday.

And a HUGE thank you to Photographer and newcomer to volunteering for BARK, Stephanie Paquette. Thrown into the fire for her first time as photographer for this event! Stephanie was shooting almost non-stop from 8 to 5 and photographed over 200 dogs! Way to go Stephanie and thank you for all your time!

Dogs in Canada Magazine

Just a note to followers and fans of Dogs in Canada Magazine. The new Dogs Annual is now available and features lots of local dogs this year. Featured on the cover of the Directory of Breeders is a beautiful seven week old Siberian Husky from Kortar Kennels of Kemptville, Ontario. I was photographed this beautiful pup last year in the fall at Kortar Kennels. Thank you for a wonderful time and the time to capture this stunner shot.

On a side note I had a great time going through hundreds of entries submitted for the Dogs Annual photo contest. Congratulations to all the winners of both the dog & cat photo contest. Great shots everyone! Also T a big thanks to photographer and close friend Brigitte Bouvier for helping judge all the entries.

A Country "kissmas" Pic

It is booking up fast, this year's Country Kissmas Pic at Wag Doggin it Cafe on Bank St. The wonderful staff at WAG are booking the sessions for Friday November 30 from 3-9pm. Sessions are by appointment only, but there may be room for walk-ins too.

The concept is a country feel to a great photo of your pouch giving you a kiss! UNDER the mistle toe (paw)! This one should prove to be a hoot! Sessions are $59 and include a custom 5x5 print ready for framing and 5 custom country kissmas cards.

It is too often that I seem to be posting another farewell tribute to a fantastic dog that has touched people's lives. I want to start by saying that I take my job of photographing people's pets' as a true dream come true. The bond between people and their animals is one of the most pure emotions I have had the pleasure of capturing as a photographer. Being able to capture in an image what people see of their animal in their own eyes is my mission as a photographer.

I connect with each dog, I love to see their true spirits come alive during each session, nothing is more true than my photo session with Louis.

One of my first photo session at Greyhounds Reach the Beach in 2006 was with Louis and his entourage. Louis was majestic, young at heart and had a wise but young at heart look in his eyes. At only four years old, Louis was diagnosed with cancer only weeks after GRTB 2006.

After surgery , love and care and a year of receovery , I was so inspired to bump into Louis on the beach this past fall at GRTB 2007! How incredible to see his spirit in tact after his battle! It made my year to see him!

And so it was such a huge sadness when I received an email only a week after returning from GRTB, that I was informed that Louis suffered from a huge internal hemmorage that they could not stop. Louis left us with only memories from a few short years.

It is dogs like Louis & all the others that have I have photographed and that we have lost, that make our lives whole. Without them we may have not seen or come to know the definition of bond, selfless love and silent devotion.

Every year I will raise a toast to Louis on the sands of GRTB.

The Galgos

Every story of horrible treatment to an animal is always alarming & disturbing to me. After hearing about the GALGOS and seeing some of the horrible treatment documented on the internet, I had to draw your attention to this situation. And although there are stories of dogs being mistreated all over the world, I mentally can only handle helping one group at a time. I hope this posting will help one person make a difference in a glagos life.
Adoptions are available to us in North America and you can also help volunteer at a shelter in Spain. The body of text below was taken from a community forum for the organization www.galgorescue.org Galgo Rescue Interntaional Network (GRIN)

Without a massive international onslaught, the Spanish Greyhounds (known as "Galgos") are condemned. Condemned to suffer and to die in a deafening media silence.

For just 2, maybe 3 years of their short lives those gentle Greyhounds from across the ocean only know a miserable life, with no advantages, before experiencing the most violent and unimaginable death.

In Spain, Galgueros (hunter with Galgos) do not use guns, they use their Hounds. But those hunters show no mercy to their faithful companions. The Galgos are treated as hunting tools, shut in a shed most of the time, ignored except for the hunt.

Already used to maltreatment by the age of 12 months, deprived of food and care, their owners do not hesitate to always inflict more atrocious suffering. In spring hunting season ends. The massacre and abandonment of Galgos reaches its height when the galguero, devoid of all feeling, carries out the final atrocity. The most traditional method remains, to this day, hanging by a method known as œthe pianist. The Galgo hangs, its feet just touching the ground, causing it extreme agony for several days. Then, exhausted and suffocated, it collapses, “hanging himself freeing the Galgueros of any kind of guilt. Whilst out for a walk in the forests of Spain, it is not unusual to make the macabre discovery of one of these unwanted Galgo hanging from a tree.

Around 10,000 Galgos are thus sacrificed each year, out of a total of 500,000 continually renewed by the galgueros. Hopefully there are rescue teams battling without let-up against these rituals of a by-gone age; rituals which involve abandonment, training to run fast behind a moving vehicle, starvation because they are then supposed to run faster to catch the hares, limbs amputated by unimaginable cruelty and pain. In some regions of Spain, especially in the South, the slow agony of the Galgos guards the tradition of this taste of men playing with death and, unhappily, it is difficult to eradicate some of these rituals, even the most unbelievably cruel.

Galgos are also very often stolen in the shelters by the Gypsies, they usually use them as bait in dogs fight, the are also using them for their hunting needs, they are very cruel and heartless...

After 5 years of non-stop battle, and influenced by different Greyhound and Galgos rescue organisations, Barbara Lefranc joined the Scooby-Belgium team ( www.scooby-belgium.be ) in June 2007, their priority being to mobilise public knowledge and opinion and to get Spanish petition signed-up in order to obtain a law to forbid hunting with Galgos in Spain. Helped and assisted by a team of volunteers, Scooby-Belgium steps in, notably in welcoming the Galgos into their associated refuges in Spain, and then finding caring homes in Belgium and France.

The mission of the association.

1. To remove these gentle defenceless animals from immediate danger.
2. To welcome them into the refuges and rehabilitate them both mentally and physically.
3. To find them homes with families who will give them the love they deserve.

Never abandon their post
A tribute & farewell to Uncle Buster

An incredible story was passed on this evening. A very special uncle in my family passed away this past week. My Uncle Buster and Aunt Dorothy have been a special part of my life. As a child, growing up in Montreal, I would visit their farm. I loved everything about those visits and those trips mean so much more as an adult.

With every visit was a special dog that would greet you at the gates, herd you back to the farm house when you ventured too close to the creek in the back fields and protect Uncle Buster's cows from the darkest of night's noises. There was always a special dog......

During the funeral of uncle Bus, my Aunt Dorothy was sitting on a chair in a cemetery surrounded by fields of cows and farmers crops. Out of no-where a beautiful blonde lab appeared by her side and raised his paw on to her lap. Since Uncle Bus' funeral, this beautiful dog has not left her side. No one knows where this dog came from, none of the neighbours have seen this dog before....he just appeared.

It was another incredible trip to Rehoboth Deleware for Greyhounds Reach the Beach. The weather was a huge improvement, with sunny skies and HOT sandy surf! Thank you for everyone who allowed me to be a part of your special weekend with some fantastic images captured on the beach! For now I had to post a group shot of the Dewey crew! 12 hours of brainstorming & motivational conversations was probably my second favorite part of the trip. Greyhounds Reach the Beach
We are off, the Canuck team of Julie Kelly Chillydogs.ca, Char Harding of Around the hounds.com, Kelli Oliphhant-Burns doodledogpaintings.com and myself are packed and ready to hit the beaches of Deleware USA.

A fantastic weekend of vending and meeting some great inspirational greyhounds. This will be my second year at GRTB and I am excited for our dynamic Canadian team offering incredible design, art and photography.

Once again we are having our special invite only Design & Wine pre-GRTB evening at our cozy cottage in Rehoboth. This is a great night of casual mingling and getting a sneak peek at the offerings of these inspirational vendors.

Joining this fantastic canadian evening is California's Cara Brockhoff of NorthCoast Greyhounds. Her jewells will bedazzle you! We are so honored to have Cara and her incredible fundraising talents join us for the second year in a row.

Bow WOW

It has been a fabulous summer and I cannot believe the time has gone by so quickly. Over the summer I have attended some great events and met some wonderful dogs and owners. I really appreciate the time you spent checking out the products at my booth and saying hello!

I love to meet people and chat about their favorite subjects......their dogs. Every dog has a distinct personality & traits that I treasure during photo sessions. As well thank you to all of you who have mentioned your loyalty to reviewing my blog and keeping up with what's going on.

I have crossed paths with some wonderful dogs and thought a small gallery of images would be a great blogger item. So a toast to a wonderful summer of images and capturing the personalities of some great canines from Ottawa, Montreal & Toronto.

And a special toast to those dogs who have taken their path to the rainbow bridge, although they may not be here to fetch that stick, kong or chase the squirell anymore, I am comforted that my images have allowed to keep their spirit alive for you who miss them so dearly.

Saying Goodbye

Lick for life WAG
If you missed the Lick for Life @ WAG on Bank Street on July 28th, you missed a great afternoon of peanut butter (even spagetti) and lots of licks! I met some great dogs and had a great time working with each one of them! I created the Lick for life days to help support a company called LIFESTREAM in Kingston ON. They are an animal blood bank that support local veterinarians in saving animals lives. They are in desperate need of a bloodmobile which cost thousands of hundreds of dollars.

URBAN dog photog feature article on PamperedPuppy.com

Just a quick note for URBAN dog photog followers, there is a new article in the July issue on Pampered Puppy, this is great site for all dog lovers. I have high respect for the photographers that Pampered puppy has interviewed in the past and take their interest in featuring my photography as a huge compliment! Sad good-bye to Monty
It was with sadness and shock to hear that Bark & Fitz's mascot Monty the bulldog passed away last Monday. Monty was a fantastic soul that brought smiles to anyone who he strolled up to for a quick scratch on the bum! LOL! I produced some of my favorite photos with Monty, he was so much fun to work with. I am so glad we have these great memories with him.

Dog days of Summer News

It has been a steady summer with photo sessions in Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal. I have met some wonderful dogs with great names like: Monty, Hoyo, Remus, Tak and Timmie to name a few. Their dog books are turning out wonderful and I am very excited to see them coming in soon.

B.A.R.K. is holding a new event for all us that love to support saving and helping dogs. The first annual Pooches Picnic is set for August 26 in the Arboretum. Check out the info here B.A.R.K. I am working with Sharon to get as many vendors as possible at this event, so if you are interested in being a vendor please contact Sharon at smckeil@primus.ca

Their Annual fundraiser in May was a huge success! B.A.R.K.'S 6th Annual "Woofs and Wags" Walkathon was an overwhelming success. We raised $55,000. We had about 700 people walking, great prizes and a lot of fun at the BBQ after the walk. Partnering with the Ottawa Sun brought in many more people through increased advertising and much work from their PR people to heighten awareness of abused abandoned dogs.The Sun provided a trophy for the team collecting the most money which was won by the Katrina Dog Team that raised over $4000. headed by Gloria Baggs. Gloria heads Catahouls rescue in Eastern Ontario and she recruited many of her "Houla" people to help the team. Next year we plan to make her a new signthat says "Kats and Houlas". And just an update that the photos will be sent out this week as they are at the printer as of today! There were over 200 dogs photographed so thank you for your patience in getting your 5x7's!

Calendars
so for all of you who have pre-ordered or inquired, we are getting closer. The designing of each page has taken a lot longer than I had anticipated, but we are so close to final production. As soon as I have them in my hands I will post and contact you immeditely! I am really excited that this calendar will be a great tool for raising funds for the PAWS for Charity group and our efforts in raising funds for breast cancer research.

Lick for Life July 28th
I'll be hosting another Lick for Life event at WAG Doggin it Cafe on Bank Street on July 28th. This is a great way to get a shot of your dog in a pose that you commonly see and laugh at, but may have never captured before! NEW dog forum!
It was about time that I got rolling on an idea I have had for a while, although it is not a printed version, it is a start. I have run into so many dog businesses in the Ottawa area that I wanted to create a place that a dog owner could come to and find these cool and unique businesses!

National Magazine Award nomination June 15, 2007
The Human Being Jack C-ing Magazine April 2006
For those who are not aware, my background is as a newspaper staff photographer for close to 10 years. My training as a photojournalist is to capture emotions within people and tell their stories through photography.

Back in 2004, while working at the Ottawa Sun, I spent 8 months documenting an unconventional guy named Jack Davidson. Living at Ottawa's Hospice Mission Palliative Care unit, Jack learned to deal with his fate living with Hepatitis C and AIDS. This photos published originally in The Ottawa Sun, were re-published in 2006 by a great Canadian magazine called C-ing. A magazine dedicated to showcasing Canadian photojournalists and their work from across the country.

Recently, the photos of Jack were nominated in the Portrait category for the National Magazine Awards. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Toronto June 15, 2007.

Although I have moved on to photographing a different subject, my passion for capturing truth and moments that speak volumes has not changed. Photographer and publisher Keith Morison recently said to me that as a photographer you should be able to find a great photo in all that you are passionate about. (I say here here!)

Publisher Keith Morison's C-ing magazine has had a wonderful year with numerous awards and nominations from the POYi 64 and National Magazine Awards. And check out his site for a "Foxy" golden retriever in his wild art section! Posted below are some of the photographs from Jack's story Published as a special pull out section in the Ottawa Sun December of 2004 and re-published in April of 2006 in C-ing magazine. I am truly honoured to be nominated beside talented, indredible photographers from across the country. I raise a toast to you all!

AHH!! The Spring air!

You know it's spring when the dog's nose gets moving a mile a minute! Had to let you see this shot of Timmie, the famous dog of Timmie Doggie Outfitters in Toronto. We had a great time during Timmie's photo shoot at his local dog park hang out! Timmie's now offers a spa for the papered pouch! If you get a chance to go by you can check out the photo exhibit featuring three of my images.

On a different note I wanted to direct your attention to a link that I have added called "Walking for Veronica". In March I lost a dear friend to a Brain Tumour. Veronica was a close family friend and was only diagnosed a year prior to her death. It was a journey that nor myself my mother or father will ever forget. If there was a day that deserved a good walk in the park it is May 12th at the Ottawa Spring Sprint at Vincent Massey Park. In honour of Veronica, her family has started a blog and foundation in her memory. Their team "walking for Veronica" will be at the Spring Sprint raising money. Thanks to everyone for coming out to the Pet Lover's Expo and stopping by the booth. Although the weather was not exactly great, Merrickville is still a beautiful town to visit for the day! May 6th
B.A.R.K. Woofs and Wags walkathon
So everyone has to come out this event! A great day at the arboretum raising money for an awesome organization and cause that helps a ton of dogs! The day includes a free barbeque and vendors that have provided their services for free. In fact the line was large for photographs that I have enlisted a great photography friend of mine Brigitte Bouvier.

Last year B.A.R.K. spent close to $175,000 in vet bills. Any money raised during their largest fundraising event of the year will go towards a great cause. I have been working with B.A.R.K. for close to 6 years and I have been inspired and propelled to action by the awesome conditions that Sharon and Peter go into to rescue these dogs. If there was a day that was worth a walk in the park, it is this day. Plus the trees are always blooming in the park! It is a beautiful day. Everyone do the non-rain dance please! So stop by, grab the new brochure, get your photo done....but most of all enjoy raising money for an awesome group!

Spring Fever!

Well it has been a crazy spring and it continues to get even more busy! March was a great month with a great trip to Vegas for a great workshop with one of the world's top wedding photographers, Bambi Cantrell and the WPPI. I had a blast and refreshed my shooting skills at the same time! I have a list of events that have happened or are about to! Hope to see you there!

Lick For Life

Last month, I celebrated valentine's day by photographing beautiful dogs at Ottawa's Bark and Fitz location on Richmond Rd. in Westboro. I wanted to capture the dogs in mid-lick! What a hoot!

Along with the photo shoot was an awareness campaign about an organization in Kingston called Lifestream www.animalbloodbank.ca
Here is a brief explanation of their organization taken from their web site:

"Veterinarians are keenly aware of the shortage of companion animal blood supplies.
LifeStream Animal Blood Bank team members are passionate about animal welfare.

Our team is willing to do whatever it takes to promote public awareness of veterinary transfusion medicine and the magic of animal blood donations.

The mission of the LifeStream Animal Blood Bank is to provide quality blood and blood products for veterinary transfusion medicine.

We collect blood donations from volunteer canine blood donors." ~lifestream

Woof 'n' Wag Walkathon

This is my second year that has invited me back as the photographer for B.A.R.K.'s annual walkathon and major fundraiser on Sunday May 6. This is a great day in that you need to attend & and help fundraise for. The 7th annual Woof ' n' Wag walkathon for BARK will be taking place at the Arberetum on Sunday May 6, 2007. This is a wonderful hard working group that rescues, provides medical attention, fostering and adoption for dogs. I wouldn't have Chili-dog (the crazy terrier seen above) if it wasn't for B.A.R.K's trip to the Hurricane Katrina areas.

I was so sad to hear that a wonderful dog I had the pleasure of photographing passed away during the Christmas holidays. Kelly was a beautiful girl with a wonderful gentle soul who captured my heart and lens on top of Montreal's Mount Royal. My thoughts are with you.

A new year! We are officially leaving the Year of the Dog, what a great year to have launched my Dog photography business! Thank you to all of you who allowed me to meet and document your incredible loyal companions.

Kicking off the year of 2007 for me is a great day at Bark&Fitz on Sunday Feb 4. I have called it Lick for Life! in support of a great organization called Lifestream . This is one of only two animal blood banks in Canada providing Vet clinics the valuable blood needed for animal emergencies. Lifestream is one of my chosen organizations that I will be supporting throughout the year.

A great Grey: Louis

This image was captured during a photo session while attending Greyhounds Reach the Beach in October of 2006. Louis has a great personality with a loving side of him that truly captured me. It was with a heavy heart that I heard about Louis' cancer just before Christmas.

I feel so privileged to have had the two hours with Louis to capture his presence for his owner to embrace forever.

X-mas photos for B.A.R.K.
Every year I donate a day to B.A.R.K for Santa Paws photos. It is always great to see the returning owners and pets who I have come to know over the past couple of years. As well as the committed volunteers who spend endless hours pulling together to help raise money for this incredible rescue group. I'll have you know
Santa was on his best behaviour for the visiting dogs.

Once again, as every year, I am always torn by the horror stories & conditions that some of the rescued dogs have come from. I encourage you to visit the B.A.R.K. web site and think about volunteering or donating at the next event.

PAWS for Charity

I am proud to be a part of the group called PAWS for Charity, where myself and three very talented women have come together to help raise funds for breast cancer research. We made a great first time donation to the Canadian Cancer Society for $2200, raising the money in only a short couple of months. This is only the beginning of our effort bringing dogs and our products together to help raise money for very important issues. We plan to continue our fundraising and will launch our 2007 campaign ideas soon!

Dogs in Canada Magazine

A little update for all, Check out the Dog in Canada Annual on sale now. The Zen of Fetch was shot in Constance Bay this past September with beautiful labs from breeder Mike Quennville of Mooselakelabs.com His labs are also featured in the upcoming December issue of Dogs in Canada magazine. Keep a look out for upcoming issues next year of Dogs in Canada for more Ottawa featured dogs.

Lots going on since the last post. I had an awesome trip with some fantastic women entrepreneurs Char & Julie of Aroundthehounds.com & Chillydogs.ca for an event called "Greyhounds Reach the Beach". We had an incredible week of vending in Rehobooth Deleware in the firehall and resting our heads at a very cute little cottage in Dewey. Despite the Nor'Easter that hit the coast while we were there, we had a great time visiting all the incredible dogs visiting our booth over the weekend. I had the honour to photograph many wonderful people and their beautiful greys and even a non-grey! Here are some shots from one of the shoots on the beach with Gaby, Tinkerbelle & Doc. I cannot wait to get their books back, keep posted for an update and a peak into their books in the next couple of months. I look forward to pre-booking for Dewey 2007!
